End-to-End Reliability - The Changing Landscape of Data Centers
This conference is designed for anyone involved with 7x24 infrastructures – IS, data center, disaster recovery and network/telecommunication managers; computer technologists; facility or building managers, supervisors and engineers. Attendees and their organizations benefit because proactive plans and cooperation from diverse functions are needed to improve reliability. By promoting a dialogue and clarifying the synergies among functions, past conferences have enabled teams of attendees from a given organization to better communicate the critical importance of a proactive approach to continuous uptime. Large data centers primarily use double conversion UPS to protect the critical loads. This double conversion technology consumes 5 percent to 10 percent of the power provided to the data center loads. The increase in energy losses are converted to heat that requires additional energy for cooling, resulting in an increase in facility electricity costs. This presentation will provide attendees with recommendations on design, application and operating techniques to optimize the energy efficiency of double conversion UPS in large data centers and other mission critical facilities.

Double conversion UPS is required for data centers, but operating continuously in double conversion mode is not required. The utility Smart Grids in developed countries are clean and reliable enough 99% of the time. The double conversion UPS does not need to continuously condition utility power that is already "clean".
Eliminating unnecessary power conditioning improves UPS efficiency to 99%. When utility power is not clean, the UPS returns to double conversion operating mode maintaining reliable power to the data center. GE will analyze utility reliability, UPS performance and data center power quality for UPS high efficiency operating mode.
