This course will provide the students with an understanding of GE Multilin industrial communication LAN hardware, protocols and HMI software used in modern industrial Power System applications. The course will start with an introduction to common communications terminology and then progress to the different LAN technologies supported by GE Multilin’s industrial relays. Hands-on lab exercises setting up, configuring, and testing RS232, RS485, Twisted Pair and Fiber Optic Ethernet LANs will reinforce concepts presented in class lectures. With the aid of a software serial protocol analyzer, the student will become familiar with GE Multilin’s implementation of the Modbus protocol. As a final step, the student will create and integrate monitoring, control, alarm and trending HMI (Human Machine Interface) screens using the EnerVista Monitoring software.

Any Industrial Plant personnel new to communications and want to understand how to integrate their relays and meters into communications network. Students who wish to learn about automatic fault data retrieval and archiving, monitoring, programming and control through GE Multilin supported LANs will benefit most from this course.
