This course will provide the students with a comprehensive understanding of the different communication hardware and protocols that are found in modern substations and industrial Power Systems. The students will be introduced to common communications terminology and will receive hands-on experience in setting up and configuring RS232, RS485, Twisted Pair and Fiber Optic Ethernet LANs.

The student will study Multilin’s implementation of the Modbus protocol with a software serial protocol analyzer, create monitoring, control, alarm and trending HMI (Human Machine Interface) screens using the EnerVista Monitoring software. The course will then progress to cover the Universal Relay’s implementation of DNP3.0, UCA2 and IEC 61850. Lab exercises will include the high speed UR relay-to-relay GOOSE and GSSE messaging in addition to lecture and lab exercises on the Universal Relay’s Direct I/O.



Any Utility personnel new to communications responsible for integrating relays and meters into communications networks. Students who wish to learn about the advantages of networking devices, such as automatic retrieval/archiving of fault data and remote programming and control devices, will benefit most from this course.
